An ottoman traditionally is a wooden box with cushioning on top. These boxes are used to rest your feet when you are relaxing. Ottomans were very popular in the Ottoman Empire and this is where it gets its name from. Normally ottomans are sold as part of a set and are paired with an armchair or glider. They are designed to match the chair or glider that they are paired with. In most homes they can be found in the living room and are used solely to put up ones feet. Designers are now coming up with innovative ways to use this piece of furniture and there are number of different uses that ottomans can be used for.
Quite interestingly the term is derived from the French word ottomane which is the feminine version of ottoman. The word could have also been derived from the Italian Ottomano Medieval Latin Ottomanus Medieval Greek Othomanoia from Arabic Utmani. Ottoman was also the name of an empire of the late 16th century.
Some Features to Look For When shopping for a storage ottoman you will want to make sure that the color and pattern you choose will blend seamlessly with your current furniture. If you need a coffee table search for benches that have a multipurpose lid. A bench that has pockets sewn into the sides makes a great place to store all of those shoes cluttering up your closet and they make the perfect bench to place at the end of your bed. Benches that will be sat on should specify the amount of weight they will hold so make sure you check weight limitations before purchasing an ottoman.
