There are several types of ottomans: standard storage ottoman tables coffee table ottoman and bench. The ottomans were the favorite piece of furniture named after the Ottoman Empire which lasted from 1299 until 1922. The Ottoman Empire spanned three continents Western Asia Eastern and Southeastern Europe and North Africa. World War One ended Ottoman rule in these parts of the world but not the spread of its cherished footstool. Even after the empire lost its power the name stuck to this very versatile and useful footrest and its popularity spread like wild fire especially in America. In one sense the ottomans have reconquered a large share of the world and arguably more people know the name now than they did when the real Ottomans were in control.
Anyone who has ever said "All I want to do is get home and put my feet up" knows how valuable ottoman furniture can be. Whether to stretch out at the end of the day to read a good book or watch a movie or whether to elevate your feet to protect your health an ottoman offers comfort and ease. Both functional and decorative factors should be considered before purchasing ottoman furniture to ensure that you choose the right ottoman for your home.
Let It Be Leather. Just as a coffee table is likely to serve as a footstool at some point the ottoman invariably serves as a makeshift coffee table too. As a resting place for legs and feet an ottoman needs to be easy to clean and durable. For its durability and functionality ottoman leather has almost become synonymous with ottoman furniture. Leather bears up well under heavy use and its patina only improves with age. Ottoman leather suits both contemporary and traditionally decorated rooms too adding texture rich color and style.
Ottoman Furniture Options. Ottomans are armless upholstered seats or benches. They are available with a solid base or with decorative legs. Ottomans are most often used as a footstool but they have other uses as well. Some ottomans are made hollow to provide room for storage a feature that is particularly useful in small homes and apartments where storage room are always welcome. Ottomans are available individually as a component of sectional seating or as part of an easy chair sofa or loveseat set.
Standard ottomans are basically footrests for an armchair or easy chair. That is all they are made to do. When some one says "Put your feet up and take a load off" they are really telling you to sit down in a comfortable chair relax and rest your feet on the ottoman that is in front of the chair.
The main purpose ottomans serve is for a place to put your feet up on when relaxing on a couch or sofa. They are alternatively used as a place to sit near a table if they have the proper weight rating and construction designed for this. Ottomans also are often used as a place for storage which makes them great for family rooms to store toys games movies DVDS etc. keeping your room tidy and organized. Some even have a removable top with a hard surface that can also serve as a surface to eat food on or play games. Simple ottomans are designed to be a decorative piece for any room and are generally used as a filler piece of furniture.
